Can someone please tell me how to change the ball joints in my 99 Dodge ram1500?

Jack up your truck under the A-arm of one side. place a jack stand under the frame. KEEP THE JACK UNDER THE A-ARM YOU NEED TO KEEP THE PRESSURE ON IT. You can only do one side at a time unless you have two jacks. Take off the wheel loosen the lug nuts first. Remove the cotter pins from the ball joint and unscrew the castle nut on the top ball joint.

I do not know if your ball joints are rivetted in but more than likely they are so you will either have to drill them out, or if you have an air compressor and an air hammer you can chisel the rivets off. If they are bolted in then hey just remove the bolts. Now remove the top ball joint with a BALL JOINT SEPARATOR you get at the parts store also known as a %26quot;pickle fork%26quot; you will also need a hefty hammer to hit the tool with. The ball joint should pop out. Now do the same with the bottom one. You may have to suspend the Spindle with some wire so you do not damage the brake line after you get the ball joints off. Replace with new ball joints that come with bolts and nuts. Grease the fittings or have them greased at your local Quick Lube before you start the job. Replace everything and torque everything to specifications. Now do the other side. It is not too hard but there are a few special tools and it can take some time to remove the rivets.|||Your best bet would be to go out to your local parts store and pick up a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for you truck and read it. Those helped me do alot of things on my car that saved me alot of money.|||i own a repair shop, and if I%26#039;m not mistaken these ones are pressed in,if so you,ll be better off having it done ,because its not as easy as it sounds to do ,if their the riveted in type you can grind the rivets out and change them ,but you need some good tools and a good work ares to do this in,if it were me id have them done, its a lot easier and the labor isn%26#039;t that bad on having them done, good luck i hope this help,s.

I am changing the tie rod ends and ball joints... is there another part/parts that i might as well change?

if you have not started this. caution.. measure the distance of the old piece.. the alignment can be ruined.. the toe in and out. you could ruin a set of tires just being a sixteenth off.. after you change. make shure you have greese fittings on the replacement pieces.. and after you are done have an alignment done.. also i would buy a grease gun. hand operated and five pounds of good grease.. if this had been lubricated regularly you would not have to replace ok gilermo|||what kind of car? if i were you i would get it aligned.|||Any other steering joints (ball joint at steering box, idler arm if your vehicle has one.

Check your brakes. How many miles? Wheel bearings maybe...|||if you r changing both upper and lower balljoints and inner and outter tie rods ends u pretty much got it.

you may wanna check the pitman arm and idler arm for play. they are attached to the steering.

if there is no play them you are good to go. but i do recommend getting a wheel alignment. since it is outta wack.

if you don%26#039;t you will wear your tires out very quickly.|||Definetly get an alignment. If it is a truck/suv, check for wheel/hub bearings for any play at all. If its a passenger car, check your brake pads for wear and your shocks for any sign of being damp.|||thats about all as far as parts concerned. now on the front wheel drive, you will have to rent a special tool, if your changing the inner tie rods, and you will need a pickle fork to seperate the ball joint and tie rod, after everything is installed, you need a grease gun to grease them.

How 2 change ball-joints on ford 350 econoline?

HI

This is really not a job for a novice. Are you sure it got ball-joints or is it the Twin I beam? The Twin I beam has king pins not ball-joints..but onward

1) coil spring compressor tool

2) ball-joint removal tool

3) floor jack

4) Various sockets and dikes (side cutters)

jack up front end use Spring compressor and take the tension off the A-arms.

Remove the cotter pins

remove the nut.

use ball-joint removal tool on lower ball replace with new ball-joint tighten

use ball-joint removal tool on upper ball replace with new ball-joint tighten

remove spring compressor

done

good luck

tim|||The previous answerer has told you how to change ball joints but do you have ball joints on your Econoline? If it is 1992 or newer you do have ball joints but if it is 1991 or earlier you have kingpins. All Econolines from 1968 to the present have a twin i-beam front suspension and from 1968 thru 1991 the i-beam axles, upper control arms %26amp; spindles are connected by kingpins but from 1992 to the present they are connected with ball joints. So if your Econoline is 1991 or earlier you might want to ask how to change kingpins.

What would be the affect of having worn out Ball joints. How do I know its time to change them?

I have a Toyota Corolla 1996 with 220 K + on it. I am wondering what would be the affect of having worn out Ball joints. How do I know its time to change them? What are the signs? Thanks in advance for answer.|||First sign of worn out ball joint, is too much play! and obviously bad handling. to check put the on a jack stand and wiggle the wheel, you can feel right away if there is any play ! now if you have handling problem on a car with 220k miles..it could be anything, suspension, joints, bushings you have replace everything to get it right, but it wouldn%26#039;t be worth it. if the car is safe to drive I wouldn%26#039;t put any money in to it. the reality is no matter how much you spend, it%26#039;s only worth about $500 to $1000, max.

Good Luck!|||Uneven tire wear and bad handling. Also you might hear a clunk when going over a bump or pothole.

My mechanic told me that my ball joints on the front of the car were rusted and very loose.?

So he showed me and yea he was able to pull them side to side with ease. They need to be replaced. Though he said if I did not change them, the front ball joints would break off and the whole tire would break off. Is this true?|||Unless you like your car sliding down the road on it%26#039;s oil pan in a shower of sparks before you crash into a guard rail, I suggest you get them fixed ASAP.|||Yes.|||Yes that is true...............md|||If any of your ball joints fail, it will result in the vehicle going straight to the ground. It%26#039;s basically a pivoting mounting point for your front suspension, and when it goes, the suspension loses that mounting point and it%26#039;s straight into the road you go. I%26#039;ve seen it happen several times. It%26#039;s not true to say the wheel will break off, but it%26#039;s not good when ball joints go.|||Your mechanic is 100% correct. Ball joint failure causes lethal accidents.|||It can get dangerous in a hurry , a couple of hundred dollars now can save lives

plus it saves tires and the car will handle so much better

How do I change lower ball joints on a 2000mountaineer all wheel drive?

Better leave that to an expert. It takes skill and the proper tools. Your going to get hurt seriously.

Tools needed are a spring compresser, an air chisel, a good hammer, and a pair of pry bars. You must be able to raise and lower the front end. You also need jack stands and work on a concrete floor.

You could even be killed when a spring gets away.|||it can be done with a large hammer and some hand tools, but since you are asking,i have to advice you to take it to a garage.you can get hurt real bad trying to do this if you do not understand the dangers involved.

How easy is it to change the bottom ball joints on a citroen ZX advantage?

i got the same car and same problem, bought the ball joints off ebay getting them fitted monday morning 35pounds all included.diff to change unless you have a ramp.|||i could do it in my lunch hour|||you%26#039;ll need a balljoint splitter (a two pronged chisel that pushes the pin for the balljoint out of the clamp), a couple of jacks as you need to support the car and the wishbone, apart from that its pretty straightforward.

How to change ball joints on a cutlass ceira?

Simple answer is you take off the old ones and put on new ones.

More complicated answer is, if you have to ask how to do it, you should bring it to someone who knows how to do it already, or at least have someone with you who knows how to do it. It%26#039;ll suck to get them off, and not be able to get the new ones on. There are tricks and procedures.|||Proper tools and equipment and knowing what year the car is to get parts.

Changing a ball joint on a 97 GMC K1500 cannot get factory rivets out?

I am trying to change the ball joint on my truck we grinded the heads of the rivets and popp put the old ball joint but the the bottom of the rivets are very very tightly seazed in the upper control arm any one kno wwhat i can try to get them out. Have tried all kinds of hammers slide hammers air gun hammer. nothing will budge these rivets|||go to a frontend shop and watch them, or read a repair manual|||drill them . first hit them with a grinder due to the fact you might case harden them from beating on them|||I used to watch front end mechanics cut them out with an oxy-acetylene torch, but in your case, I concur with the others. Drill %26#039;em.|||Drill em.|||You will have to drill them out.|||Yes, drilling them is the way to go. When you put the new ones in, bolt the ball joint to the bottom of the control arm instead of mounting it through the top. This will decrease the angle of the ball joint and make it last longer.|||I have always torched them out.

How do i change the lower Ball Joints on my 98 neon ?

i looked at it and i think i can do it myself instead of takeing it somewhere .|||you can do it yourself but special tools are required.

Service and Repair

Notes

REMOVAL

1. Using a screw driver or other suitable tool, pry seal boot off of ball joint assembly.

2. Position Receiving Cup, Special Tool 6758, or equivalent to support lower control arm while receiving ball joint assembly. Install Remover/Installer, Special Tool 6804, or equivalent in top of ball joint assembly.

3. Using arbor press, press ball joint assembly completely out of lower control arm.

CAUTION: When installing ball joint in its mounting hole in lower control arm, position ball joint so notch in ball joint stud is facing the front lower control arm bushing. This will ease assembly of ball joint to steering knuckle when attempting to install pinch bolt.

INSTALLATION

1. By hand, position ball joint assembly into ball joint bore of lower control arm. Be sure ball joint assembly is not ****** in the bore of the control arm, this will cause binding of the ball joint assembly, when being pressed into lower control arm.

2. Position assembly in an arbor press with Receiving Cup, Special Tool 6758, or equivalent supporting lower control arm. Then install Remover/Installer, Special Tool 6804, or equivalent on the bottom of the ball joint assembly.

3. Carefully align all pieces. Using the arbor press apply pressure against ball joint assembly, until ball joint is fully seated against bottom surface of lower control arm. Do not apply excessive pressure against ball joint and lower control arm.

4. Install a NEW ball joint assembly sealing boot on ball joint assembly. Install sealing boot as far as possible on ball joint assembly. CAUTION: Do not use an arbor press to install the sealing boot on the lower control arm ball joint assembly. Damage to the sealing boot can occur do to excessive pressure applied to sealing boot when being installed.

5. Position Receiving Cup, Special Tool 6758, or equivalent over sealing boot so it is aligned properly with bottom edge of sealing boot. Apply pressure BY HAND to special tool 6758, or equivalent until sealing boot is pressed squarely against top surface of lower control arm.|||with care take a look most are rib it in you will either have to grind and chisel you most time its three and remove the large nut off the bottom/top you need a jack there is some presure so you must be careful what take off a big hammer and atool called crows foot remove nut and beat it|||Rent the tool(ball joint press) get amanual on how to do the job, either have an air compressor and a 1/2%26quot; impact with a socket that fits the ball joint tool or have some good size arms.

I can tell you from doing them that ball joints are probably one of the best values in labor you%26#039;ll find in auto repair.

The guy at the shop will do it 1 hour a side, probably charge you 2 hours per side ( you pay by a flat rate fee)(not the actual time taken)(if your upset by that think if it tokk 4 hours a side)(you want a price upfront so we use a flat rate).

Best to have a car lift, special tools, air compressor and patience, they are PRESSED in TIGHTLY!!!!!

By the time you rent the tools and do the job you%26#039;ve wasted a whole day and if you get it wrong, (MOST major suspension component) you may have an accident with no one to fault.|||You can. Buy the Haynes or Chilton manual to help you.|||WITH THE TIME WASTED AND THE TOOLS THAT YOU WILL NEED, JUST HAVE A SHOP DO IT FOR YOU AND IT WILL BE A LOT SAFER.

how to change ball-joints on a 1998 ford E-150, or should i take it to mechanic?

I don%26#039;t remember all the details off the top of my head, so I won%26#039;t give detailed descriptions.

You will need a manual. Chilton%26#039;s is about $30.

You will need a ball joint press, with adapters. Expensive, yet can be rented at some auto parts stores (such as Autozone). %26quot;Rental%26quot; is what they call it, it%26#039;s actually a refundable deposit.

You will also need a floor jack, or a good size hydraulic bottle jack.

And a couple of jackstands.

A good set of wrenches. (impact would be handy, but not necessary)

A big hammer.

A firm, flat surface to work on.

If this list turns you off, go to a mechanic.|||you need a manual, jack stands, jacks, big big hammers. Lots of big tools, pickle forks, dry area to work. Its a dirty job. |||its a good 4 hour job if you have everything that you need and know what you are doing. If you have any experience, yeah, you can do it. If you have someone who can assist you, even better.

But if you haven%26#039;t got a lot of under car experience, you may not have any choice but to take it to to the shop.|||haha i used to work in a ford dealership and we LOVED ball joints, getting paid 7 hours for a 2 hour job? gravy work, i would suggest going to your parts house and getting a HAYNES or a CHILTONS repair manual, i myself prefer haynes, its a pretty simple job. |||I dont know what that is, I just wanted to be the first to answer your question.. lol, take it to a mechanic! and good luck

How do i change ball joints on a 1991 chevy s-10 pick up?

Jack up the truck, remove the tire, remove the steering knuckle and press out the old ball joint. Then press in the new ball Joint and put the rest of it back together.

Change both the upper and the lower.

But be very careful with the spring. It can get dangerous if you don%26#039;t know what your doing.|||Go to a mechanic and ask to borrow a ball joint tool. Just say that and the mechanic will know what you want. You will need a hammer and you have to hit it till it gives way. If the mechanic won%26#039;t lend you one then you will have to go to a auto shop and get one.|||go to local auto parts store and buy a repair manual for your type and year vehicle.this should tell you all the tools and parts you need to replace the ball joints if it is a 2 wheel drive.|||depends which one. the top one you have to drill the rivits out and then bolt the new one in. technically pretty easy. the bottom one i think might be pressed i never replaced one yet.

How to change ball joints on 03 Taurus? Different than Chev. No info in books.?

Change the car...It is a piece of crap!!|||You need to change the whole A-Arm for the upper ball joints, and rent a tool to remove the lower ball joints. Don%26#039;t waste your time with air hammers, torches, or bigger hammers. Rent the tool (for free @ most auto parts stores) and do it right. You use the same tool to install the new ball joints|||Its not that hard but over time the ball joints are a pain to get out they usually will knock out however when you buy your ball joints ask about the tool to remove it they will probably load it to you, hope this helps.

How do i change theupper ball joints 97 mountaineer?

is it easiest to change the whole control arm? can anyone tell me how? just trying to see if it%26#039;s something i can do. thanks|||ball joint is made with the arm

When is important to change your ball joints on your car?

when they are worn out -- too much internal clearance to keep your wheels in alignment as you drive|||If you hear them, grease them, then if they clunk, replace quickly.|||when they are wore out

I not going to change my front lower ball joints, because my mechanic say nothing will happen. Mechanic they?

I not going to change my front lower ball joints on my Dodge Durango, because my mechanic say nothing will happen. Mechanic they try to scared you saying that the wheel will come off, They say that because they want your money!|||If it fails your wheel probably WILL fall off. At the very least you will lose control and crash.|||Had it happen. The wheel and knuckle will come off, severing your brake lines, damaging the body of the car, you will have no steering control, and it will ruin the control arm as it drags the ground. Your mechanic, or whomever is full of it. It is not a fun experience, been there, got the scars to prove it.|||It can happen. I am a mechanic and have seen it. It even happened on my wife%26#039;s F150 while she was driving about 35mph.|||If a worn ball joint breaks, you will probably crash. These joints allow the front wheels to turn, move up and down, and take a large load of the braking force. Is is worth it to you to save money? If they are worn bad enough, the car will not pass a safety inspection.|||No you don%26#039;t have to change them but when you kill your whole family because you didn%26#039;t oh well, It%26#039;s just your family you can always get another one,Your mechanic is dumb or he just don%26#039;t want to do it because he don%26#039;t know how ,|||any mechanic that told you that you wouldn%26#039;t have any problems is wrong ,the wheel wont fall completely off but it will lay over and cause you to have a wreck and hurt someone if their bad they need to be changed, their not that bad to change out on those trucks,id get them done as soon as possible, good luck.|||Yes I want your money for making your car safe to drive. I want to be paid for my labor. For liability reasons, if I told you you needed ball joints, and you didn%26#039;t want them replaced, I would refuse to do any work on your vehicle, and also mark your estimate as an unsafe vehicle. That way when you crash into a busload of nuns, they cant sue me for not fixing your car. If you have bad ball joints, they need replaced period.

If you cant afford proper maintenance, then park it until you can.

If my cv joint pulled out when i was changing lower ball joint?

if my cv joint inner pulled out when i was changing the lower ball joint if i put it back in it will go back in when i rotate it it just popped back into place and put the ball joint and control arm back in willit be ok, or are there some clips iside that would be damaged?|||yea there is a lil %26quot;C%26quot; shaped clip one the part that goes into the trans they are hard to get in sometime you just have to push really hard mabe even get a dead blow hammer and beat on it a lil but it will go and snap in DONT PULL it once u get it in or you will ruin the cv joint but if u need some more pointers just msg me and i will be glad to help|||there is special reusable retainer on the end of the cv shaft that holds it in. as long as you got it all the way back in, it will be ok

Do you need a ball joint press to replace lower ball joints on a 1998 chevy blazer?

Are there any special tools needed to change lower ball joints in a 1998 four wheel drive chevy blazer|||A ball joint press is a big help, but it is not absolutely necessary. Many times I have smashed them out with a big hammer, but the trick is you need to have enough room to get a really good shot. This method usually works well on small cars, but I%26#039;ve used the hammer method to remove and replace ball joints on a Dodge pickup, but it was really hard to do, they were a really tight fit. You may want to consider renting a press if you find that you cannot smash them out. Hope this helps.

Question about my 1998 Mercury Mountaineer ball joints?

I recently took my truck to get an oil change and the mechanic told me i needed to replace the upper and lower ball joints. Yes, the trucks tires do vibrate around 60mph but then quits. I%26#039;m thinking of changing the sway bar end links now because I am strapped for cash. Do you think this will help until I can get it taken care of and how long do you think I might have before I have to change those ball joints? Thanks|||If you have a vibration that starts %26amp; stops at a certain speed,it%26#039;s probably a wheel balance issue,Have the tires balanced %26amp; rotated %26amp; see if that doesn%26#039;t help.As far as ball joint wear, does the truck make any noise(bangs or clunks)when you hit a bump or hole? Are the front tires cupping or wearing unevenly? These are a few clues that you might need some front end repair work. Also, keep in mind that many shops that advertise a low price on oil changes,do so to get your car on the rack, and then try to sell you whatever they think they can get away with.I hope this helps you, good luck!|||you should take your vehicle to a mechanic that you trust

it will cost you less in the long run

you are wasting your money on replacing the sway bar links

Should you get an alienment if you get your ball joints changed?

i own a repair shop, and you have to get one,it makes the front end so far out of alignment that it will wear a good set of tires out in no time, plus it may pull real bad to either side of it,but yes always have it aligned after replacing a front end part its always recommended and is a good idea to have it done as soon as possible, good luck i hope this help,s.|||yes or you wear out the tires quicker, and get new tires|||Yes, always. It is cheaper than wearing out a set of tires, cost for rubber what it is.|||ball joints don%26#039;t require an alinment unless the ball joint is adjustable to do alinments! and even that is not very common. what kind of car are you working on?|||absolutely There is no way to align on bad ball joints|||yes. in the process of the repair the alignment changes and it%26#039;s cheaper than a replacing your front tires.

you have to separate the ball joint from its mount (there is a tapered shaft%26quot; that should POP apart then re install

IMPORTIANT you may or should have the alignment checked/adjusted profesionally after replacing the parts

if not you will be go throught many tires and possibly have steering issues|||you forgot to mension if it was a 4 wheel drive or a 2 wheel drive.theres a difference.|||I%26#039;m not that familiar with that truck, however I would highly recommend that you go to a parts store and get a maintenance manual for that vehicle as it could save you from getting hurt or worse. Those ball joints on some vehicles are very hazardous to replace, especially for a novice.Good luck and hopefully its an easy project.|||HI..... I am always down for trying to repair vehicles yourself. In the case of ball joints I would have a shop do that for you. No Not the dealer -- they will overcharge you.... Its not rocket science to change them but you will need some specialized tools like spring compressors forks and other stuff.... I dont know what state you are in but I am here in the northeast. They use lots of salt and sand on the roads in the winter. because of this there is usualy a bit of rust under the vehicles and bolts have a tendency to snap off instead of screw off. It can be really frustrating to deal with parts that dont want to come off.... I changed my shocks, water pumps exhaust -- even a fuel tank once -- Ball joints? to heck with that!! Why buy tools that you may never use again when the same money can pay a mechanic....... While your at it change the shocks and any bushings that might be bad while its apart!!

How easy is it to change ball joints on a 95 vw golf?

any tips? thanks|||Its not easy, especially if you do not have the right tools.

You have to remove the control arm and then heat and press or beat the ball joints out of the control arm. You then have to press them back in.

When to change Ball joints , Tie rod ends, Sway bar links on a Toyota Corolla CE 2006?

Vehicle is just about to hit 50k on the Mileage, and the Tires recently been replaced|||There is no scheduled maintenance for those things. You replace them as needed. Your owners manual will tell you when to check them.

My 97 escort makes a clunking sound when I hit bumps, both sides in front. Changed ball joints, still clunks?

your car has struts and in most cases it will be both the strut and strut mounds, there%26#039;s rubber that goes between the strut and where the strut mounds to the car, this over time this wears out and cases the bumping sound you say is going on, and the strut its self can case this to happen as well.

i would take it to a shop and have then check it out, most brake shops will do this for free, then you can fix it your self or call around for the best price.|||Check the rest of the suspension components, it might have bad struts|||Shocks or wheel bearings.|||it could be worn struts(they%26#039;re like shocks)you can lift the front end up and with a pry bar start seeing what part feels like it has alot of play in it and go from there|||the struts are bottoming out and it is possible the spings are probobly weak.|||Check tie rod ends but toad is most likely right if its not the struts its likely the strut mounts.|||Struts or inner tie rod ends.|||its your top rubbers for your strut mounts...take struts out and put NEW rubbers in the mountain....had the same problem many a time on fords....

What happen if i dont change My lower ball joints on my Dodge Durango?Wich i not going to change, my durango?

What happen if i don%26#039;t change My lower ball joints on my Dodge Durango?Which i not going to change it, my durango think that have money to spend on her on chrismas time.|||Durangos have ball joint problem on certain years. Chrysler may even have a recall on them. Check with the dealer. If they are loose and not replaced then one of your wheels and tires may fall off and pass you on the highway. They will come apart and let you down. If they are bad they need changed on both sides. This is a safety issue not %26quot;I ll fix it when I get ready to deal%26quot; It can kill you or someone else............md|||Your tire is held in place by three joints -- Upper ball joint, lower ball joint, and the steering linkage. The upper balljoint keeps the tire level, the steering turns it, and the lower supports the weight. Without it, your tire will not stay up straight, and the upper balljoint would simply snap it%26#039;s stud... and your tire would snap off. You see how out-of-control cars are when a tire blows out? They can still steer and have a rim to roll on. Your car would fall on it%26#039;s frame. It%26#039;d be totalled and you%26#039;d be lucky to be alive, as well as anyone around you.|||Well lets see, it falls off you can%26#039;t steer, you loose control of the car and ether kill or injury yourself oe hurt someone else.

I know things are tight and Christmas is coming, but it would be better if you were not in the hospital over this season

So my advice is get it fixed.

|||the wheel will fall flat. actually like a 45 degree angle inward. it would probably happen under heavy turning/braking or in 4wd either way those are pretty bad times for a wheel to more or less fall off.

How do I change ball joints on a 97 jeep cherokee4wd?

1. Remove steering knuckle.

2. Press ball joint from steering knuckle, you can use a big C clamp.

3. Put clamp over replacement ball joint and position it against yoke shoulder, then tighten clamp and press ball joint into knuckle.

4. Reinstall steering knuckle.|||Find a willing donor! not me - I need mine!|||take to a certified specialist.|||Its not a easy job .... if you%26#039;re asking here, I doubt if you would have the resources to do yourself. You need alot of tools I doubt you have. And you probably kill yourself trying if you did!

Not trying to be funny, It%26#039;s a serious job|||If you are not a mechanic or do not have the knowledge how to do it, don%26#039;t! You can screw up your front end. Take it to a mechanic. What I would do is go to a Jeep dealer and tell them you want them run a VIP history on the vehicle to see if there are any recalls. DaimlerChrysler had problems with the ball joints on certain Dodge Durango%26#039;s, so maybe they had some with Jeep. A recall is done at no charge to you. If there is no recall, tell them to see if there is a TSB (technical service bulletin.) If there is, tell them you want DaimlerChrysler to participate with you in the repair. They may offer to pay for the parts if you pay for the labor. Ask them to split parts and labor.

How do I change ball joints on my 1988 chevy silverado truck?

You need to get a ball joint separator you can get one from Autozone, Advance, etc. Then also buy a Chilton%26#039;s or Haynes%26#039;

manual, it will tell you everything you have to do step by step to get the job done. You will still need to get your truck aligned but if your ball joints are worn you need an alignment anyway. As long as you don%26#039;t remove or adjust the tie rods it shouldn%26#039;t hurt to drive a short distance to get the truck aligned. You can alway have it towed to get it aligned. If you are not very mechanically inclined I do not recommend trying to do this repair by yourself.|||with a wrench|||Just take it to a mechanic. Once the ball joints are replaced it needs to be realigned anyway. Which can%26#039;t be done in your home garage.|||you will need some specialty tool,s to do this.....a spring compressor [ for coil spring,s].....a ball joint separation fork....you will also need to grind/chisel the retaining rivet,s if they re original.......remove the ball joint retaining nut...separate the ball joint/lower a frame assembly from the spindle assembly....support the lower a frame...remove retaining hard ware at the ball joint...wait ...compress the spring first...to re leave any pressure...reassemble in reverse order....take it for an alignment....good luck!

How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?

I%26#039;m having a hard time making right turns. The power steering fluid is full. The dust boots on the lower ball joints on both sides is cracked. Should I attempt to replace the ball joints myself or just take it to the shop? What would be the average price for all four ball joints to be replaced? Thanks!|||Raise the front end off the ground, place jack stands under the frame so the front suspension hangs free. Take a long pry bar or a wrecking bar if that%26#039;s all you have. Move the lower %26#039;A%26#039; frames up and down. Grab the tires and see if they move around or feel %26quot;loose%26quot;. If the ball joints are bad, you%26#039;ll see them move. You can also work the steering back and forth and maybe see whats binding. Ball joints are not hard to change, they are not very expensive.|||zzzzzzzz|||Above are good answers. Check first according to what said.

Ball joints are not too expensive and they not hard to replace, just work safe. I not sure of the tool name. I call it a %26quot;Tuning Fork%26quot; It just a simple tool you hammer between the ball and where it bolt in and it pop out easy (We hope). I would suggest you get a cheap repair manual for $15-20 at the auto-part store, many will rent/loan the tuning fork if you not want to buy.

Also, as mentioned some use a Rivet type mount and it may need drilled out, the new ball joints come with bolts to mount them.|||If they are the original ones they are riveted to the control arm assembly. I usually grind the heads of the rivets off and punch the rest through. New ones come with bolts to bolt onto control arm.

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker鈥?/a>|||Haha, I think the best way is to take it to the shop! If you%26#039;ve never done it before, these things are a pain to redo when you mess up. I have a %26#039;96 4x4 Chevy S-10 Blazer, and I don%26#039;t even bother trying to do it myself or having a friend do it. I just take it into the local, small mechanic and let them fool around with it.|||fullsize or s10 blazer?

fullsize you need to remove the brake caliper, lock out hub, remove the 2 jamb nuts and washer that hold the rotor/wheel hub on, then remove the 6 1/2%26quot; nuts that hold the spindle on, smack the spindle with a rubber mallet or a block of wood to remove it, pull out the axle shaft, then remove the castle nuts from the tie rod and upper and lower ball joints.

once you do that remove the knuckle, and grab that ball joint press that you either bought or rented. then press out the lower ball joint, and finally the upper.

reassemble in the opposite order of disassembly.

s10 blazer is basically the same way but you dont have to deal with a spindle assembly.

you remove the 3 castle nuts, free the spindle from the ball joints, and pull the spindle and cv shaft out.

then press out the ball joints. the upper may just bolt in, but i dont remember.

How to change the ball joints on a 2001 taurus?

I need to change the ball joints out on my 2001 Ford Taurus SES. I have removed spindle nut, wheel, brake calipers, and rotor. I have also been able to knock support arm off of the ball joint bolt. The problem is, in order to press ball joint %26quot;body%26quot; out, I have to remove the trans-axle from the hub. I cant get it to budge. What am I missing here? Help!|||spray a heap of crc on it and try to knock it through with a brass or copper hammer, or a hammer with a block of wood. it might be tight because of rust- just keep coating it with crc each time it moves a little bit.|||take 2 sticks of dynmite and blow that piece of crap car up lol

Changing Watts Link Assembly ball joints on PT Cruiser?

Can the ball joints be removed from the connecting rods of the Watts Link assembly connected to the the rear axle of a 2001 PT Cruiser. The ball joints are threaded into the rods but it looks like there are crimp marks around the rods were the threads are. Does this mean the ball joints and rods cannot be seperated and must be purchased as a unit or can I just purchase the ball joints?|||the tie rod ends are permanently attached to the rods. normally that watts link itself usually is what makes the clunk.|||It can be done.....but....wayy cheaper and easier to replace them as a unit.

Do i need to replace the tie rod ends when changing the ball joints on my 1999 ford exxplorer?

no jeff ! as long as the tie rods are still good then all you have to do is separate it from the steering arm. just change the ball joints and hook the tie rods back up.|||Only if they a worn also|||Tie-Rod Ends do not need to be replaced unless they are bent, damaged, or if the boot is torn. If everything appears okay, then it probably is of no concern. Clean it off, double check for tears or damage, and if it has a service port for a grease gun, inject some lithium grease into it until the boot swells slightly.|||only if they are bent or damaged

What is the average cost of labor and parts to change ball joints on a 1997 Ford Areostar 4WHD Minivan?

I just received this vehicle as a gift, however it needs to have the ball joints replaced.|||I am assuming that you are talking about a 1997 (AWD) all wheel drive and if so then here is what you are asking and its a big job.

The front upper joints come with the control arms and one is $531.28 and the other one is $489.76, the lower ones run $107.98 each that is the factory ford ones but you might be able to find aftermarket ones for around $40.00 each on an average.

The labor book time will be 8.4 hours including a 4-wheel alignment at whatever your local hometown labor rate is.

Changing ball joints on a 97 s-10?

its a 2 wheel drive, just wondering how hard it is, i can do most anything, but have never done ball joints so was just wondering--anything i should know??|||The ball joints are not pressed in on a chevy s10. They are riveted from the factory. You will need an air grinder and a very strong air hammer to do this yourself. Once you get the rivets out and the old ball joints out, the new ones will bolt. The new bolts will come with the new ball joints. Also make sure to check out the rest of the front end, idler arm, center link, upper control arm bushings, if they are all good then go get a four wheel alignment done afterwards.|||i have never done them on a s10 but i will tell yaou you will most likely need a ball joint press(alot of places will rent them) but ball joints are not that hard on other vehicles so it should be ok on a s10|||air chisel works really well then the joints will fall out with a good smack. You can do it in about 2 hours.

My mechanic just called! Can the threadsof the front axle be stripped when changing the ball joints?

It is a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee|||yes they can and it%26#039;s quit possible they done it by

cross threading the nut when they put it back together.|||Yes if the axle nut was put back on crossthreaded. Will they admit it?|||it can be stripped, but by no means from normal everyday use. this was caused by crossthreading, or by turning the nut even tighter when it should%26#039;ve been turned the other direction. this is almost definitely caused by bad mechanical work (either by the garage previous to the one you have it in now, by the same garage you have it at now last time you had it worked on, or by the garage you have it at now during this repair).|||It doesn%26#039;t even need to be cross-threaded to destroy them, the stubshaft nut on the front axle is usually siezed. When removing the stubshaft nut, it pulls the threads off with it. Seen this a few times.

Any helpful hints on changing ball joints on a 2000 f-150???

Took my truck in to get it alligned and they said it needed new ball joints for $649.00. Looks like I%26#039;m mr.machanic for a while.|||Ball joints are a tough fix. Once you%26#039;ve removed the %26quot;a%26quot; frame you have to knock the old ones out, then you have to find someone to let you use they%26#039;re press to reinstall. If you have the tools and a %26quot;chiltons%26quot; for directions and tourque specs,go for it!My advice would be to find a reputable shop and hire it done.Save you%26#039;r knuckles and get a guarantee.

I need help changing the ball joints on a Dodge Ram 3500 V10?

I have to change the ball joint on a 1997 dodge ram 3500 RWD and i need to find a way to compress the spring without killing myself and i dont know how to please help|||you don%26#039;t have to compress them on that truck like dave said you will have to pull the front axles out and use a ball joint press on them but you don%26#039;t mess with the springs on it,i done one last week and it takes about an hour a side to replace those,if you have the right tools, good luck.|||You don%26#039;t need to compress the springs to do that job on that truck.

You will however need a ball joint press to get the old joints out and the new ones in. And an air compressor and an impact wrench is preferred even if not completely necessary.

Sounds like you may be in a little over your head. Have you thought about finding a reputable repair shop to help you?

Best of Luck!

How to change ball joints on a 1998 dodge Ram 1500 4x4?

My dodge ram needs new upper and maybe lower ball joints on both sides. Is it possible for me to change them myself?|||I had an 01 that needed upper and lower on both sides. I took it to my mechanic, and he did it in 6 hours. Some shops will tell you 10 hours or more, but that is a joke. Its a big job!|||If you can borrow the special tools to do it ,mabe|||if you know what your doing and have the correct tools and equipment it books for 2 hours per side....if you don%26#039;t ...don%26#039;t try....you%26#039;ll end up making things worse and it will cost you more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

How do you change the ball joints on a 1991 ford ranger?

My 91 ranger is real loose in the steering. Local machanic wants $450 to change ball joints. I would rather do it myself, if possible.|||You need some fairly stout tools for a pickup ball joint job.

1: Remove the brakes. If it%26#039;s 4x4, you need the socket for the big nut to remove the brake rotor and bearings. There is a lock peg in a groove that can be removed with a magnet or small pick.

2: 4x4: Remove the spindle. 5 or 6 bolts in a circle and you might need to tap the spindle to loosen it up. Don%26#039;t hurt the threads or smooth areas where the bearings ride. Then remove the axle/u-joint assembly. Fluid will leak from the diff, so a pan is in order. On a 2 wheel drive, the spindle stays put.

3: Remove the cotter pins and large nuts from the upper and lower ball joints and outer tie rod.

4: Big hammer to the steering arm and upper part of the knuckle to break loose the ball joint and tie rod stud tapers and drop the knuckle. It will drop, so you might want one of the ball joint nuts on 2 or 3 turns to catch it. Don%26#039;t hurt the spot where the brakes ride.

5: Remove knuckle and use a ball joint press set to press the old ones out and new ones in. You probably want a 1/2%26quot; impact wrench to run the press. Hand wrenching a press gets old fast.

6: Reverse procedure to install. Refill the diff.|||Garages are in desperate need of work due to the economy. Your best bet is to call around and ask for an estimate to replace the ball joints, ( you may need an alignment too), but tell them you want to supply the parts yourself because the garage will mark up the parts price on you. Buy cheaper ball joints if you have no plans on keeping the truck long, but if you still plan on having it around for a while, then buy Moog brand ball joints, they are the best around. So with some luck you may save yourself about $100-200 bucks and you wont get your owns hands dirty at the same time.

good luck.........

Changing ball joints on 1969 el camino?

I was wondering how expensive and hard is it to change ball joints in a 1969 el camimo?|||Its not that bad. I check to see if they are bolted in the uppers control arm, if not then you will have to drill out the rivets holding them in. . If so then all you have to do is have the bottoms pressed in. Shop around by me in WI did it for 40 bucks. Make sure you look into ways to change them though. As you need to do it safely. Always use a chain through the coil spring with a padlock on it so in case the spring jumps out. All ya need is a jack and some hand tools to do this job besides a press.|||Hard, no. Dangerous - yes. Changing ball joints requires removing the potential energy contained in the spring as you free the joint. When I do it, I thread a tow chain through the spring, so that if the spring should attempt to liberate itself as I pop the ball joint with the fork, it cannot leave the car. A spring can kill - or seriously maim. Other than that, its a matter of jacking up the car, popping the joints with a pickle fork, and replacing.

Expense wise, for both sides, I%26#039;d expect at least 700 bucks for a mechanic to do it - more or less depending on your area and the additional parts that may need replacing/servicing. Generally, if you replace the ball joints on a classic car, you may want to go whole-hog and replace the bushings, shocks, brake lines, sway bar bushings and joints - in essence, doing a front-end rebuild.|||its not hard you will need what they call a pickel fork that spreads the ball joint out then you count how many turns it takes to turn it out the screw the new one in a big hammer a pickle fork and time is on your side if someone else can do it so can you give it what you got you can do it have a good time but then get it aligned
