How to change neon ball joint?

Go to an auto parts store and spend the 12 bucks on a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for the year and make of your car. It will show in detail many, many different repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures. This is by far the best money you could spend on your car. It will save you much grief and effort and if you plan to keep the car, it will save you a lot of money on future repairs.
How to change neon ball joint?
Hard to explain here. Buy a neon manual that you can get at almost any parts store. It isn't to hard, but it is time consuming.

The same way you change a pastel colored ball joint.

1998 Dodge Durango - Loose ball joints?

After getting an oil change at Walmart Auto Center, a mechanic suggested I get a wheel alignment as the inside of one of my car's tires was beginning to wear.

Then I find out, after taking it to the appropriate place to do a wheel alignment, that I have four loose ball joints (upper and lower) on my front end.

I know this is common with Dodge Durangos. I've done my research and am not happy with my car anymore, after I get this fixed it's up for sale.

The first place I took it to gave me a quote of $1,100 - this covers the ball joints, tire rotation and alignment. Is this a deal?

I've never had anything repaired from this shop and want to ask around for a better deal, but before I do (I really my car to get back to work and school, and the place that is asking for $1,100 can do it right away), what's the average for a job like this?
1998 Dodge Durango - Loose ball joints?
that's way to high on replacing ball joints in that vehicle, i did one a few weeks ago and the bill was only about 800 and that was counting the new alignment on it,and i replaced all of them, you need to search around some before you let any shop repair this one, their taking advantage of you on that price, its not a good deal, their making it sound good by saying that they can take it in right away, but don't fall for that trick, its normal for those to need replaced though, its one of the durango,s bad faults, you need to also have them check the tie rod ends on it because bad ball joints will cause premature wear on the tie rod ends also, good luck.

how can that happen 4 ball joint at the same time? Wow $1,100 is alot for a old Durango in repair I had my transmission rebuilt on my 02 Durango for $1,250 dollars last week! I would check other repair shop for a different quote good luck,
Where are the tires wearing on the outside or inside? Why I'am you this is bec if the tires are only wearing on the outside and not the inside I highly doubt that both the upper and lower ball joints are gone.

I'd shop around and have a couple of other shops perform a free front end inspection and get their free quotes or estimates and I'd want to see exactly what parts are bad and be shown the play etc they have.

One of my concerns is you don't mention changing the front tires and if all 4 ball joints are worn out you'd need to replace the tires before ever getting any 4 wheel alignment performed on that vehicle otherwise the getting a 4 wheel alignment is useless.

I just checked with Parts Source here in Canada and the best replacement upper and lower ball joints with a lifetime warranty go for about 100 bucks each retail, or you can get both for under 100 bucks that come with a 1 yr warranty, also the lower ball joints are cheaper for a 4 wheel drive Durango.

Now if you consider the fact that each one takes 30 to 45 mins to replace you're looking at 2 to 3 hrs of labour at an average of about 80 bucks per hr.So the parts shouldn't run any more then 400 bucks and the labour about 240 bucks , plus the alignment is about 80 bucks. That is about 740 bucks without taxes so yes their price is a bit high for sure even if they charge 100 per hr 1,1000 bucks is high.

Again check around and remember that if you plan on selling it then don't spend the money on the lifetime warranty parts and you should be able to find a shop that will do the whole job for around 520 bucks plus taxes.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way there are some shops that will install parts that you supply and offer a flat rate per job so you might want to look into that, also the prices I was quoted aren't the lowest prices there are other parts suppliers that offer those parts even cheaper but I'd recommend using at least a mid grade or mid priced replacement part. You might even get one shop to do the labour then book another shop for the same day to do the alignment on it and remember if the tires are worn unevenly they need replacing too.

Jeep liberty--how many times have you had your ball joints replaced?

i have a 2005 and they have been replaced twice already--once b4 the recall, once after. going in for an oil change tomorrow and i've been feeling the same feeling that i did b4 when they needed to be replaced. how many times b4 you can expect them to do something about it? i've looked up the lemon law for NY and time limit is 18,000/2yrs. unfortunately i'm at 33,000. what do you all think? anyone else had problems?
Jeep liberty--how many times have you had your ball joints replaced?
Jeep has had a problem with the KJ ball joints. There have been 2 recalls out for the same reason. Some people have had ball joints replaced up to 5 times. And yes, it is something to worry about. When the balljoint gives out, you lose control of the vehicle and in most cases, body damage is unavoidable. If you are really concerned, contact Chrysler.
Jeep liberty--how many times have you had your ball joints replaced?
0 lol
it's just ball joints...you don't need to freak out and lemon law it for that. If it were the engine that needed replaced that many times, then i'd be thinking about lemon laws.
Sounds like you are getting ripped off. Ball joints should not have to be replaced that often. Unless you do some serious off road use. Unless the parts were cheap to begin with a good set of ball joints should last at least 10 years. You could have wheel or tire issues of maybe just need some bushings replaced.

I own several pre Chrysler Jeeps and have only replaced the ball joints only when rebuilding the front suspension or the off chance I break one.
you should never be charged again to have you lower ball joints replaced it doesnt matter how many times they fail they will ALWAYS be covered under the recall

Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?

I had a bump in my 04 ESV and was getting the Stability control message. Today I went to the dealer and they told me the front bearings were very loose. Left upper and lower ball joints are loose. Right front inner tie rod end is loose and boot is torn. They quoted 1708 for parts and 1162 for labour total with tax 3330$. I found parts cheaper from part source and on ebay but wondered if it is difficult to change this myself.

Any help would be great some instruction how to change these parts.

Thanks for any help.

Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?
I'll second Richards response! This is not a job you want to tackle. There are specialty tools required and an alignment needs to be done after the parts are replaced. The dealer quote seems really high to me as well. Try to find a reputable independent shop and have them inspect the vehicle and give you an estimate. Don't tell them what the dealer told you or found. See if they find and recommend the same items be replaced. You should also have them show you the parts and explain why they are bad. You do need to be prepared to pay them for their time in inspecting your vehicle and writing an estimate if you do not have them do the repairs.
Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?
no very easy.
Easy for some, difficult for others. Buy yourself a shop manual or a Haines Manual. It will help you step by step. Hope you also have the necessary tools.
Not to be an *** here, but if you had to ask that question, you probably shouldn't. Unless you have a friend who is a whiz at mechanical things.
You said front bearings are very loose, these are sealed bearings and require a press to change them. Inner tie rod bad, can be removed by striking the mount collar hard or a fork splitter. Ball joints require a ball joint press to remove and install them and an alignment should be done when all parts are replaced. These are not the usual back yard mechanic type repairs. Speciality tools are required and I doubt that you have them. The cost you mentioned is high, suggest you get another estimate from an independent shop.

Replacing ball joints on car?

I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire, and have been told by Midas that my front suspension is really loose at the lower ball joints. They showed it to me, and I could see that it was really loose and I probably won't pass safety and emission testing to register my car unless I get this fixed. I'm pretty sure I can do this for about $400 less than what they'd do it for, but I'm wondering if this is something extremely difficult to do? I can change my oil and replace the brake pads, but would something like this be way over my head? Has anyone else done this successfully without any trouble? It didn't look like it would be hard to change, but I don't want to start on it and then break more things....
Replacing ball joints on car?
Well, i'd say that a home mechanic could do that job, but--you'll need some big tools, a pair of safety stands, (and not the el-cheapo sold by Pep boys, or K-mart!) an air wrench, possibly a large hammer and chisel, a hydraulic jack, wheel chocks or blocks, and a whole pile of patience. You will also need the %26quot;Salad fork%26quot; tool, to remove the tapered end of the old joint from the lower control arm!

Also, it would be advisable to have another form of transportation, to go to get any parts you forgot to buy! Or, to exchange the wrong parts for the right ones, which you will discover after you get the car in an undrivable condition. This always happens--do not ask me how i know!

Replacing ball joints, how do you remove torsion bars?

Can some one give me the procedure for replacing the lower ball joints on a 99 gmc yukon 4wd. It has torsion bars, how do I loosen them and how much? Could I just keep a jack under the control arm instead? 聽The ball joints are the press in type and I have rented a ball joint press from the auto store. Please dont give me the %26quot;save my time and my knuckles and pay someone to do it%26quot; speech, I have all the time in the world, it's a second vehicle, and I'm willing to cut my knuckles to save $400.00. I have changed the breaks and rotors, shocks and the front drive shafts on this truck previously so I am capable of doing the job, I just need the procedure.

Replacing ball joints, how do you remove torsion bars?
Just keep a floor jack under the lower control arm, seperate the lower ball joint from the spindle, and use a ball joint press.
Replacing ball joints, how do you remove torsion bars?
On flat ground measure your ground to frame distance first (write it down)

Then set the truck up securly on jack standS on it's Frame.

unscrew the tension bolts in the torsion bars untill the tension is relived compleatly.

remove the tension rods and your control arms.

I use 2 HD sockets and a mini sledge hammer to %26quot;press%26quot; my bushings in and out.

1 socket to catch or cup/lift the bushing , and 1 to drive it in or out with a mini sledge .

lightly Greease the contact surfaces B4 installing , it helps much more.

Once you get it back together , try to set your torsion bolts as close as you took them off at.

your final tension bolt adjustment (the measurement) will come when the truck is back setting on all 4 wheels.

If you don't have a book...............Spend $20 and get one first.

You will find a repair book is worth much more then $20

This is one %26quot;Tonka%26quot; of a repair proceedure though.

    Not hard but big parts.

    Safety is essential

Mark the end of the torsion bar and the frame so when you loosen the torsion bar you can tighten them back to the same spot. Just use a paint stick or marker
Not necessary to remove torsion bars. Just keep a jack under the control arm, then disconnect and press out the ball joint. And if you don't have a ball joint press, a big hammer and a couple of appropriately sized impact sockets will do the job just fine.

    Loose Steering wheel in Silverado?

My steering wheel is very loose in my lifted 2000 silverado, any reasons why?

    just changed ball joints, bushings.
    Loose Steering wheel in Silverado?
Check tie-rod ends, Idler and Pitman arm joints for ANY play.

Have someone slowly turn steering wheel back-and-forth within the slack it has, to see if you can see and movement or worn components. Also take note of the shaft coming out of the steering box, look for any play on that shaft as well.

Being lifted only stresses the components more.
    Loose Steering wheel in Silverado?
Could be in the steering column. You say its lifted, check all the steering components, if all is good maybe go with a steering stabilizer.

How do i change a ball joint?
ball joint on what type of car
Go to the library and look it up in the Chiltons manual. You can make copies and bring them home with you. It depends on the vehicle of couse but it can be hard to separate the lower ball join because it's pressed in. They sell specialized presses to do this job, it's like a heavy duty %26quot;C%26quot; clamp with special fittings. After I took the cotter pin and bolt off I set up a puller on it to try and push it out but it wouldn't budge. So, with the pressure on it I hit the lower control arm with a long drift and a light sledge hammer and eventually it popped out. The second time I did this job I borrowed a ball joint press and it was a lot easier. This is not an easy job but I've done it twice. It took me 4 hours 2 days in a row to change all four ball joints on my '91Ranger. It was worth it though, the truck felt brand new afterwards.

  • How to Remove Ball joint Rivets?

Trying to change lower ball joints in a 96 sunfire. How the hell do you get the rivets out? I have a air hammer and a chisel set, and a air grinder. Can I just grind off the head of the rivet and use the air hammer to push the rivet out. Do i need to remove castle nut and the ball joint stud from knuckle first or will they come out while still attached? Any help would be great cause I'm at the end of my rope with this job.

p.s. I tried to drill them out but i cant get a drill under the ball joint and enough up pressure to drill them out.
How to Remove Ball joint Rivets?
ya, you cannot drill through rivets, the way you are supposed to do it is to use either a air die grinder or a dremel tool to grind one side of the rivets flush with the control arm, then take a center punch and a hammer and knock the remaining part of the rivet through. it should hammer out with no problem, if you have any question just e mail me gixxerscum@yahoo.com

Do I need a press to change my balljoints?

My truck is a '79 Ford F-150 four wheel drive and I'm changing all four ball joints this weekend. Any helpful suggestions?
Do I need a press to change my balljoints?
You'll need a press, big c-clamp looking thing, also the right adapters with it. Sounds like you're dealing with a dana 44 axle. There's also a special socket for the sleve in the upper ball joint.
Do I need a press to change my balljoints?
You shouldn't need a press for the ball joints. However there is a socket that you may need to remove ball joint from the frame. Not sure if the auto part stores will have it or if it is a dealer item. I know a lot of them just twist in to the frame.
Yea, good luck its alot of fun, but yes you will need a press should be able to use a parts house rental tool though
well it would help, but and good big jawed vice will do, done t hundreds of em, all different ways ,but I must say if you never done it before, its best to have someone show you first, or have it done, their are many things to know and to look out for and one of em is needle bearings, and how to remove the old and press in the new with small sockets, if a vice is used, and if it is a three joint shaft, note when you replace them all joints must be faze with each other OK . good luck
ill tell you a little secret on that.just about a day or so before you get ready to change them, put the ball joints in the freezer, because metal shrinks when they get cold and when you get ready to put them in,just put them in a ice chest and take the chest to your truck, and being cold, they will slide right in,and when they get warm, they will expand.i did that alot of times.
yes they do need to be pressed, and in all honesty your best bet is to take the control arms to a parts store w/ a machine shop.....they should charge about 20 a peice.
    lightinin.....

    when answering........ read the question.

How do you change a lower ball joint on a 2003 chevy S10 ZR2?
i own a repair shop, and its not to bad of a job if you have the right tools ,but if not its going to be a hard one to do,you first remove the wheel ,and then block the front end up,and then there's factory rivets you have to grind off to remove it,you need to release some of the tension on the lower control arm,and let it hang down, then you grind out the rivets, and remove the nut that holds it in place on the control arm,and then use a pickle fork or similar tool to remove it,from there its pretty easy to do.what you need to do is get a real good repair manual on the truck that will help you more than anything else could, i suggest a good Haynes repair manual there the best to use, advance auto parts has them,,good luck i hope this help,s

How can I change a lower ball hitch on a 97 Ford Taurus?
Are you attempting this repair in the driveway? If so, I would recommend you remove the steering knuckle with the ball joint, and bring it to any shop that has a bearing press, and have them press in a the new balljoint into the knuckle for you. That way, the hard part of the job is eliminated. Hope this helps.

    Ball joints ?

It's that time of year to get a state vehicle inspection sticker. Garage 1 said upper and lower ball joints on both sides were bad, needed to be changed and front end alignment before I can get a sticker. Garage 2 said nothing was wrong with the ball joints just needed a front end alignment. How do I check the ball joints on my own to see if the ball joints are bad or not? Thanks.
    Ball joints ?
Do you get any clunking sound when you step on the brakes? The sound is a low thunk in the front end. But if you jack up the front end where both wheels are off the ground, (but make sure you lift it by the frame, you want the weight of the car off the suspension). Then you can either use a heavy pry bar , put it under the center of the tire and lift. Have someone look under the suspension at the same timeat the ball joints. There should be very little play in the joints, if they pop up and down easily, then its time for a replacement. Also grab your tires by hand from both sides of the tire and wiggle side to side, look at the suspension, thereshould be no play or bouncing in the idler arm, centerlink or tie rod ends.If so, time to replace them too.

easiest thing to do is go to a 3rd garage and ask to see the affected parts while he tests them for you if he says that you need parts too.

    good luck
    Ball joints ?
If your tires are wearing unevenly you may have bad ball joints. I would get it inspected and let them tell you and if they say your ball joints are bad and your front end is out of alignment. You should get a free re-inspection if they find something wrong. Garage 1 sounds like they want to separate you from your money. If you do get the ball joints replaced get the greasable kind and keep them greased at every oil change and they will last a long time, possibly 200,000 miles. That's how long I got out of mine.
Jack up a front wheel. Put a board or something under the wheel and try to lift up. There should be NO free play. If there is, it is ball joints.
IF YOU CAN JACK UP THE VEHICLE SO THE FRONT TIRES ARE JUST OFF THE GROUND GET SOMEONE TO PUT A LONG PRY BAR UNDER THE TIRE AND AS THEY APPLY PRESSURE IF THE BALL JOINTS ARE BAD THERE WILL BE MOVENENT IN THE SHAFT OF THE BALL JOINT WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE SPINDLE ASSEMBLY

IF THERE IS NO PLAY THERE THEY SHOULD BE GOOD

Should I change out my F150 truck's lower ball joints myself? read more below.?
don't do it because if you get started and you come to a point where it wrong how are you going to take it somewhere and get it fixed? Then you'll be stuck with your truck torn apart.
Remember that when you're tearing apart your front end you can expect the truck to be torn apart for a couple of days depending on your work ethic. Also if you are going to change your ball joints you might as well replace or repack your bearings and check your seals and dust covers to see if they need to be replaced. If it is four wheel drive you will have to disassemble your hubs which takes another special tool. It is a lot of work to replace ball joints, but a dedicated weekend or hobbiest mechanic can handle it.
they aren't extremely hard as long as you know/figure out what to do. Basically take the tires off then remove the spindle and then you remove the snap ring on the ball joint. Then if it pushes out from the bottom of the control arm take a sledge hammer knock it out. Finally use the Ball Joint Press to press the new one it put the snap ring on and put back together. Repeat for the other side.
with the right tools which can be rented not a bad job. make sure you have all the tools before you start and it can be done. haynes repair manual worth every cent and you make it back with the money you save by doing it yourself. just take it in for a front end alignment when your done. good luck
you sound like me ! i,am stubborn too. ha, ha. well it can be a job but if you have the tools you need to do the job and time to do it then i can,t see why you can,t do it. just get a book like you said and lay your tools out what you need and take your time.

Do my Lincoln's ball joints need replacing?

I just got my 1997 Lincoln Continental's oil changed at a Mr. Muffler. One mechanic told me that my front ball joints needed replacing, and he showed me that if he worked at it, he could make one of my front tires jiggle up (he said there was an inch of %26quot;play%26quot;). I thanked him for the information and said that I would make arrangements with my mechanic to get them replaced (actually, my mechanic recently retired/closed down his shop, but I didn't want to be pressured into a quick decision). As I was leaving. Mr. Muffler called out that he'd charge a $145 each...he didn't mention any other associated costs. My car runs great, no wobbles, no noises, no problems.

Should I get the replacements made? What is a good price? What extra costs are going to be added to fees for parts and for replacement of the front ball joints? Is it best to go to a dealership for this work?
Do my Lincoln's ball joints need replacing?
Go to the dealer for an estimate. I would never get work done at a muffler shop, other than repairing a muffler. If your ball joint was loose he should have been able to lift the car and show you the worn ball joint.

Ask your retiring mechanic who he trusts.
Do my Lincoln's ball joints need replacing?
That sound high for replacing ball joints. There are 4 of them on your car. If you replace 1 you should replace all of them. If one went out the other three are not far behind. Call around to different shop and ask them how much to change your ball joints. I would have a real mechanic look at your car before have them replaced. I just replaced all 4 of mine in a 1994 Chevy truck. It cost me 120 for all 4 joint. I put them on myself. 1 inch sound like a lot of play for a ball joint. It could be wheel bearings.
Hello I am a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury factory trained technician. My labor time standard book (ALLDATA) indicates that for 1 side it should be 1.9 hours and for both sides 3.5 hours plus the cost of the ball joints. So you should be able to contact a shop and find out what their hourly rate is and multiply that by 3.5. I work outside Washington D.C. and our labor rate is up to $105 per hour so $145 a side, if that includes parts sounds very reasonable for my area.

I have been recently using a site that allows car owners to get real time quotes from mechanics to fix their car. Since the mechanics are working after hours you can save a significant amount of money. You might give them a shot, however I think they are primarily operating in the Washington D.C./Maryland/Virginia area.

Good luck with your repair James
Take it to another place to get it checked out. Take it to another company that does front end alignments, dont mention anything to them about that you think or were told the ball joints are bad. Dont even say it or give them any clue. They will check your car out before the do the alignment and if your ball joints are bad they will notice and tell you. If they dont tell you then you know that the other place was pulling your leg-trying to rip you off.
    Get a second opinion.

To the inexperienced eye, I can take a brand new car and show you an inch of play in the front tires.

If you do have a little bit of experience, the do this. Take your tires off. Grab the rotors at the top and bottom. Now try to wobble it. If there is play, see if the play is in the rotor or the ball joints. The ball joints are the joints where the V-shaped arms attach to your spindles. If the play is in your rotors, then your problem is in your wheel bearings. If there is little or no play at all, put your tires back on and drive it like you stole it.

  • What is the easiest way the change a lower ball joint on a 94 nissan pathfinder?

It wouldn't hurt to buy or borrow a repair manual tailored for that

    vehcile.

I've never done that particular model but there are some speicalty tools required for removal an replacement of the lower ball joint.

I believe it is a press fit along with 3 or 4 bolts and a castle nut with

a cotter pin. The tool is then used to remove and reinstall a new joint.

You can rent that tool at a good local auto parts store as well.

Good luck to you and follow those procedures in detail...

How to change a ball joint on a 95 nissan altima?

Sorry to say this if you have worn one ball joint out you need more than just ball joints to properly repair your car. Lower control arms come with two inner bushings and a new ball joint. please replace both sides then check all the tie rods and shock struts too. You will save the alignment costs if you completely rebuild the suspension and only align the car once. Ball joint is part of the (lower transverse link) that is what Nissan calles it. The alternative is new car payments.

Let me make my question more clear, My Durango is a daily driving, How can a 8 years old truck have a bad lower ball joint already? With only 98 miles I treat her right. She already had the recall done for the upper ball joint in 2005. What make the the lower ball joint go bad? We live in Florida the weather here is hot/cold! I thinking changing those ball joints in the summer of next years money is too tie right now!
Let me make my question more clear, My Durango is a daily driving, How can a 8 years old truck have a bad ball?
You said it yourself: it's a daily driver. And a heavy one at that. Worn ball joints on an 8-year old suv is not abnormal.
Let me make my question more clear, My Durango is a daily driving, How can a 8 years old truck have a bad ball?
It's not uncommon, ball joints take ALOT of abuse, consider how much unsprung weight is being held in bay a little bolt, potholes and countless other things come into the equation. I assume they are sealed as opposed to the zerk(grease) fittings, you should check to see if they are offered for your ride when it is replaced, that may help with longevity. I am also under the impression you meant 98K? If not, then yeah...that's weird
like any part they all have failures if we could determine how long every part would last that would be great i have a 2006 mustang and i had to change the upper and lower ball joints just the luck of the draw if you are going to wait to fix see if there is a grease fitting and lube it if not just keep an eye on it sounds like you re a mature driver and you could wait a little just make sure it doesn't get to bad ...an easy way to see how bad it is raise that side of the car with a jack till the tire has about 2-3 inch clearance under the wheel get a pry bar and put it under the tire lift up and you could feel how much play is there an inch up is not to bad good luck

How change a ball joint on a ford crwon victoria?

replace the whole control arms usually....

How change a ball joint on a ford crwon victoria?

You didn't state the year of Crown Victoria. But, on '92 to 2002 model years, you need to remove the brake caliper %26amp; brake rotor. You will also need to remove the backing plate by drilling out the three rivets that secure them to the steering knuckle. Undo the large nut that holds the ball joint to the steering knuckle. DO NOT REMOVE the nut. Leave it on the ball joint for the first four threads. Use a pickle fork and separate the two. Once separated, use a ball joint/u-joint remover/installer to change the ball joint(s). You can purchase the ball joints from the Ford dealer for VERY cheap. The part number is F8AZ-3050-AA for no more than $50.00. The kit includes TWO ball joints, the nuts, six rivets (three per side), and removal/installation instructions. Good Luck. Hope this helps.
How change a ball joint on a ford crwon victoria?
The ball joints are part of the control arms. If purchasing factory parts, the entire control arm will need to be replaced with the ball joint.

If your not sure how,do not try it on your own.

You will need an experianced person to help you...Find an experianced person and then go from there.
is it the lower or upper?if its the lower then its pressed in so what you have to do is put a jack under the a-frame and take off the nut and take a big hammer and pound it out and then tie the rotor and caliper out of the way, then clean out the hole.do you know the best way to put a lower ball joint in?when you buy the ball joint, put it in the freezer for about 1 day, then when you get ready to put it in ,it will just slide into the hole, cause when steel gets cold it shrinks and expands when warm.hope this helps you.the upper 1 just drill out the rivets and replace them with bolts.

1989 mazda b2200 with original ball joints and tie rod ends? (90K miles)

    i need info about them!

like how do i know if they need replaced or if i should replace them? how often do people change them 5, 10,...years?

is my rough ride because i need new tie rod ends and ball joints?
Ball joints and tie rod ends?
Ball joints and tie rods don't go bad from age, they go bad from high miles and/or lack of service. If you've been driving it for a atleast 10,000 miles with bad tierods or bad joints then uneven tire wear would of resulted by now. If theres no unusual wear, everything should be fine. I would recommend checking to see if the tie rods and ball joints have grease fittings in them. If they do, just have all the joints lubed about every 10,000 miles or so and they will last a very long time.
Ball joints and tie rod ends?
if you take a corner and you hear popping or the car leans and slowly comes back then ur ball joints need replaced and the popping bad unsmooth ride is your tie rod ends. the ball joints usually can last 5-10 years depends if you drive a lot of bumpy roads n stuff. same with tie rod ends, all depends on what kind of turf you drive on .
Ball joints and tie rod ends become loose over the years. The mechanic should be able to feel the play in the tie rods, any play and they should be replaced. Ball joints can also be checked for play. Any decent mechanic should be able to demonstrate this to you.
i would replace all of them just to be safe,a local frt end repair shop or a good mechanic can check for wear,as far as the rough ride its probablty worn shocks!! and /or bad coil springs or leaf springs or both!!!

    Installing ball joints?

i have a 88 olds delta 88 and it has ball joints on the rear,so i was wondering hows the easiest way to change them on the back.any answer is appreciated.
    Installing ball joints?
the process is almost the same for the rear,,as it is for the front,,just a little easier,,if you don't have the proper tool,s you might be better off taking it in,,and having it done,,otherwise,,you go about it jut like it was the front, but be care full i do this for a living,,and you can get hurt doing this,,i hope this help,s.

    Dam Boy!
you do not have ball joints on the back of that car.

You may be mistaking the sway bar ends.

you need to see a mechanic.
im not sure on the 88 but usually balljoints are pressed in.....if they are you will need a tool to do it with, its usually an ultra heavy duty looking C-clamp thing with different attachments.....depending on where you live you may be able to rent the tool...to buy would be expensive probably....or u could pull the arms off and run them to a machine shop and let them push u in some new ones for a few bucks......like i said tho im only guessing on the settup....you might be lucky and theyre bolted in or somthing....you may also need a spring compressor and definitely a floorjack...check out a manual....

...and u do have balljoints in the back i just looked it up....

How do I change a lower ball joint on a 1995 honda civic dx 1.5?
If it were me, I would take it to a mechanic.
this is fairly easy to do,,jack it up remove the wheel,,turn the wheel toward you so you can see the ball joint,,remove the bolt that goes through the joint that holds it to the bottom a frame..and cut out the rivet,s that hold the joint in,,yours may already have bolts,,some did,,some didn't,,now separate the joint from the a frame,,and remove the joint,,the new joint comes with new bolts ,,use them,,and bolt the joint back in place,,and re-install it back in the a-frame,,put the center bolt back in it,,and be sure to put a new cotter oin in it,,and the rest is pretty easy,,from here your about done re-install the wheel ,,and have the alignment checked,,and that's it,,i own a repair shop,,and do this all he time good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.
If it's like the ball joints I've changed--and I've changed a few--the problem is getting the old ball joint out. For that you need a ball joint separator, which is like a big two-pronged fork. The prongs are thin at the front, but they get fatter as you go toward the rear. You put the skinny front part in and hit the back end in with a very heavy short-handled hammer. That will drive the fatter part in, which will pop the ball joint loose. Then you just bolt the new ball joint in.

1992 dodge dakota 4x4... upper ball joint came apart with the shaft and nut still attached to the spindle and the upper part of the ball joint still attached to the upper A-arm how do i get them out to get a new ball joint installed? please help
How to change a broken upper ball joint on a 1992 dakota?
The upper part still in the A frame is probably a press in. That means you will need a hydraulic press to remove it. If you don't have a press, the easiest way to remove it is to take the a-frame off and have a repair shop press it out. While you are there, have them install the new joint in the a-frame. To get the bolt out, loosen the nut, and remove it with a ball joint extractor. These come in numerous varieties, so just remember to follow the instructions provided with the tool. If the socket in the a-frame won't come out, pick up an a-frame at a salvage yard.

BMW x5 2002 lower ball joints dusty?

I went to BMW and they said I have some dust on my lower ball joint in front. Do I really need to change it immediately or it no so urgent? It cost 600$ + tax,any suggestions? How long can I drive with dusty ball joints? Th ethign is I changed the whole front axle at 55k and now car only 71k. Thanks
BMW x5 2002 lower ball joints dusty?
I have seen some pretty weird questions and statements from you dude. No self respecting BMW dealer would tell you to replace something simply because it is dusty.

Perhaps you are hard of hearing or simply can not communicate with the dealer's representatives because of the bs complaints that you are bringing to them.

I think they are referring to existing damage to the rubber boots of the ball joints--they are called dust shields. If they are torn, then the grease would leak out and road dust, and grit can get in thereby damaging the joint. The logical solution is to replace the joint or the part with the joint.
BMW x5 2002 lower ball joints dusty?
dusty ball joints mean only one thing that they are dusty try a car wash you want to kno wif they are bad jack car up and holding tire side to side shake it if there is slack look under car while doing it you will see what moves .. and any front end shop or tire store could tell you if they bad that fast... i wouldnt trust any dealer with my car
I suggest you get a second opinion. A dusty lower ball joint should not be of any concern unless the rubber dust cover is damaged or torn. Could it be that the observer said: %26quot;RUSTY%26quot; and not %26quot;DUSTY%26quot;? I would suggest getting a full steering inspection and checkout. A simple test is to rotate the steering wheel back and forth while the engine is OFF, having an observer look to see if the front wheels move when the steering wheel freeplay incurrs severe resistance. When the freeplay seems too great, you must get under the car and find the worn out parts.

Low ball joint are a job for a shop with proper tools. This joint is under spring presure at all times. And you need the proper tools take presure off the joint before it can be removed. Some you need drill it out.

Ball joints, tie rods, struts and bearings in plain english?

I went to get my oil changed and the mechanic showed me my front wheel basically shakes and he said it could fall off. I need to know what these parts do and what the mechanic means. This is what he said I need : LF lower ball joint, RF inner tie rod, 2 front struts blown out, 2 rear struts blown out, RR wheel bearing very loose, 1 alignment, 2 belts.
Ball joints, tie rods, struts and bearings in plain english?
The ball joints and tie rods are the connections that control the wheels when turning. They work together. If you think of them as your arm, the ball joint would be your elbow, the tie rod would be your forearm, and the wheel bearing would be your wrist.

Struts are the shock absorbers. If those have failed, everything else mentioned here would eventually shake loose. I suspect this is where the trouble started. Without any suspension, you should have noticed a really rough ride.

The alignment is obvious, given all the other problems, and the belt replacement is a normal recommendation.

Get a second opinion before you do anything though. These are tough times, and some people will do desperate things to make a buck. Make sure the diagnosis is accurate.
Ball joints, tie rods, struts and bearings in plain english?
the balljoints hold the spindle (part that holds the wheel to the suspension) onto the suspension arms allowing them to move and turn. The tie rod is a joint in the steering that allows the spindle to turn on the balljoints when the steering gear moves. The struts are like shock absorbers, blownout meaning they have lost the oil charge that makes them work. the wheel bearing allows the wheel to rotate freely on the spindle, and is an important part of holding the wheel on the car. Alignment sets all of your wheels to run in the same exact direction to maximize gas mileage, make ithe car drive straight, and prevent bad tire wear. And the belts operate the water pump, alternator, power steering and air conditioning. The worn parts in the suspension can come apart, causing loss or control (imagine the tire coming up into the wheelwell far enough that the bottom of the car hits the road) the tir rod can cause you to not be able to steer, or to roll the car if it breaks, the wheel bearing could seperate (car loses a wheel) or lock up (one wheel stops moving) causing a wreck. And the belts breaking could cause overheating, loss of power steering, loss of ac, or loss if the alternator (no battery charging ability)
Well, I'll start with a general assessment...it sounds like maybe the struts went out on your car and then the excessive vibrations from that caused further damage over time. At the same time, that is a lot of expensive stuff which always makes me want to check it out myself when an oil change guy says it. My advice...and I highly recommend this...is to go to a different shop (maybe ask around and see if you can get a recommendation for someplace that is honest) and get a 2nd opinion. Important: don't tell them that another mechanic looked at it...just say that it's seemed to drive strange lately and you want to make sure everything is %26quot;safe%26quot;. Then if/when they say something is wrong, compare to what the other shop said.

Now on to the explanation of the parts mentioned. Most of it is all steering and suspension stuff. Ball joints are what attach the tire(and attached wheel and hub assembly) to the rest of your car while allowing the tire to move back and forth for steering. It is somewhat common for them to go bad after 100,000-200,000 miles depending on the car and how it's treated as they get alot of wear and tear. The tie rod end is another joint that connects the steering components to the tire (tire's hub actually) for steering. Again, they get alot of wear and tear over time and eventually have to be replaced. Struts are similar to %26quot;shocks%26quot;, basically their job is to absorb the bumps in the road to lessen their impact on your car and ultimately you sitting in the car. The wheel bearing is a little ring of rollers packed in grease that allows the wheel to turn freely. If the bearing goes bad or is not installed properly, it will eventually destroy your hub and the wheel can come off. Alignment is just the procedure of lining up the wheels properly so the car drives straight on the road. An alignment procedure is necessary whenever steering components like the ball joint or tie rod end are replaced. By %26quot;belts%26quot; I assume he meant the belts that tie all the engine components together. Hard to say without specifying which belts.

  • What happen if i dont change my rack pinion? It can also mess up the ball joints?

If the pinion fails completely, you will lose all steering control. A loose or worn pinion has nothing to do with ball joints.

What happen if i dont change my rack pinion? It can also mess up the ball joints?
Your rack %26amp; pinion is not connected to your ball joints. Your rack will turn your wheels left and right and your ball joints work like a pivot.

    I have a 90 4x4 bronco.the wheel camber changes on both sides when driving.ball joints all good.help?
Go get the front end and alignment check, they can tell you what needs to be done to fix it if possible.
The springs are probably worn out and letting the vehicle sag in the front causing the tires to have too much camber at the top.

about an hour with the right tools
It all depends on the tools and epuipment you have. Once the old joints are out you can bolt the new ones in. The old ones need the rivets cut off. As long as you are doing it do both of them. At the same time I would check to see if any other parts need repair. I have also had to replace the log both that comes from the stabilizer and I have put in both tie rod ends. I have a 3/4 ton mine is just a little more heavy duty than yours.

    A question about ball joints?

i have a 1988 olds delta 88 3.8 and i got control arms and ball joints on the back and how hard is it to change them?
    A question about ball joints?
MOST CONTROL ARMS EITHER FRONT OR REAR COME WITH BALL JOINTS AND BUSHING ALREADY INSTALLED. SO ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS REMOVER THE OLD ARMS AND INSTALL THE NEW ONES.
    A question about ball joints?
Does it have rear wheel steering?

    That makes no sense.
If you can get the arms off then you can use a machine shop to have the old and new ones pressed on/off
Using any generic ball joint puller should do the trick. No fancy tools.
take the cotter pin out of the crown nut go to any auto parts store and either buy or ask them if they rent a ball joint fork for a small deposit.

hammer the fork in between the ball joint and the hub to free it. pry down on the control arm to get the old ball joint arm out. do the opposite to install new one.
The rear wheels do not steer, therefore you do not have rear ball joints. You have control arms, and control arm bushings. Not difficult to change.

Why do you ask, and who told you that you have rear ball joints?

How do you change a ball joint and a drive shaft?

i have a contour that needs these parts and i cant afford to pay some one to do it so if some one can tell me step by step directions i would be grateful
How do you change a ball joint and a drive shaft?
if you have a napa store near you go there and tell them you want a Chilton repair manual for you car. do not get a Haynes manual Chilton is way better. you will need a ball joint removal tool if you have an auto zone near you they have a tool loaner program
How do you change a ball joint and a drive shaft?
This is not something someone with no experience can do, with step by step instructions.
Please don't try this at home. The tools alone will cost more than having someone do it.
You need to invest a few bucks in a good service manual. That will give you step by step directions and photos to follow. You can buy a Haynes manual at any auto parts store or buy an online subscription from Alldata or Mitchel on Demand.

You will also need some special tools--some of which you can rent from the auto parts store.

When it comes to a job like this, you're better off buying a good service manual rather than relying on step by step from here.

the way I do it is to remove the lower control arm and carry it to a shop press and press the old ball joint out and press the new ball joint in.
Just changed mine last weekend. It was a piece of cake.

You do not need to remove the control arm. Go to autozone or advanceauto and get the loaner tool to remove and install the ball joint. You need to have the capabilty to jack your vehicle up pretty high (the tool is long and you need to have enough clearance for the installation of the new ball joint. Also you need to remove the through bolt for the upper ball joint so you can manuver the spindal enoungh to separate all the parts.

You will need air tools or a torch to get the rivets out...unless they have been replaced before, because then they will be bolted in place...deffinetly not a job for someone who is not sure of their abilities...I think the job would call for around 2-3 hours, and depending on what the shop charged per hour would be a close estimate on the work...and whatever they charge for an alignment
How do i change a lower ball joint for a 1993 S10 Chevy Blazer 4WD?
alot of work you shouldv have air compressor first take cotter keys out take nuts off upper and lower joints dis connect brake caliper by two bolts support caliper take tie rod nut off outer one remove rotor spin off axle nut bring flush with axle hit ball joints on side till lose hammer out shaft spin axle nut off remove steering knuckle assembly if ball joints are rivet in origanals are chisel off replace and if you are doing lower might as well do all 4 needsc to be aligned after done they charge any where from 300-400 to do this and does not include parts
it depends...just briefly enquire about the ball joint...best if you go to the mechanic's rather than fixing by yourself.

:) hope you get it fixed soon.

  • How do i change my lower ball joints on my 97 dakota reg. cab. reg. bed 4x4?

I recommend getting the Haynes or Chilton's manual for your truck, either of which will have step-by-step instructions for balljoint replacement. Most autoparts stores carry either Haynes or Chilton's manuals.

Replacing the balljoints in your truck will be complicated by the fact it is a 4x4, but it can be done.

that depends on which ball joint you want to change the upper or the lower, all are not to difficult if you know what you are doing.

Take out the old, put in the new.
There are too many steps to explain to you here. You'll be a lot better off if you pick up an after market manual (Haynes or something). They're cheap ($20 or less) and the pictures are even more helpful then a description you'd get here.

Exactly how can I tell if the front ball Joints are going bad in my?

`01 Sable ? The car runs fine. What can happen if they r bad and I don`t have them changed, I`m also told I have a broken rear spring. Very costly job to have all replaced. Is that correct ? The rest of the car is in excellent condition, so do not plan to trade. It has 67,000 miles on it.
Exactly how can I tell if the front ball Joints are going bad in my?
They should not have worn out at 67,000 miles, but to check them accuratly you need to go to a mechanic. many ball joints are designed to have some vertical movement Of up to 80 thousands of an inch but others do not.

If they are badly worn this could lead to excessive tyre wear and at the extreme failure of the joint at which time you do not want to be traveling at speed

A full set of springs would be expensive . I would only replace both rear ones If one is really broken
Exactly how can I tell if the front ball Joints are going bad in my?
jack up front tire. place one hand on top of wheel one hand on bottom push in with top hand while pulling out with bottom and vice versa. if wheel moves in and out ball joints r bad

    Ball Joints?

How hard is it to change upper and lower ball joints on a 85 ford f-150 4x4, and are there any sites out there that show step by step how to, so i'll see what i'd be getting into if i tried t do it on my own? Thanks!
    Ball Joints?
With a 4 wheel drive assy, there are many parts involved at the wheels. It's probably best to let a knowledgable mechanic do that job. I'd say it would probably take me about 5-6 hours with the proper tools. 10-12 just winging it in my garage. P.S. for little queenie. The thing about giving advice on repairing an automobile is that some people just shouldn't do it. That's just like some people shouldn't....well, they just shouldn't do it!!! LOL
    Ball Joints?
There are books and sites out there that will show you, but if you have never done it before, take it somewhere and have it done. You don't want to see the bill for them having to fix what you did originally and fix the ball joints
I agree. If you've never done it before on another vehicle; leave it to a pro. Your life is on the line.
The biggest problem in fixing ball joints is not having a car fall on you. A guy down the street from me just got killed by a tree a couple of weeks back.

The biggest mechanical problem is getting the ball joints out. You need a tool that's like a big two-pronged fork. The prongs are skinny at the front but get fatter toward the back. You have to hit the back end of it with a heavy short-handled hammer to drive the thing into the joint and separate it. Other than that it's just a matter of replacing some parts that aren't hard to figure out.

The thing about fixing cars is that some people just shouldn't try, just like some people should stay out of the kitchen. I had one guy try to help me and he'd do things like just throw the lug nuts in the grass and make wild guesses about what was wrong. Then he moved to Africa and left his car in my yard with no title and parts missing.
It takes special tooks for the ball joints. An you will be dealing with the front spring. Don't even try it if you haven't done it before.

I have a 79 jeep cj5 and i need to change out my drivers side front axle shaft and i need new ball joints.?

i cannot get the bolts to the calipers loose to get the brake disc off. ive used WD-40 for a while now, an impact gun and heat. can i just take the ball joints off and get to the axle shaft and then i can kill two birds with one stone?
I have a 79 jeep cj5 and i need to change out my drivers side front axle shaft and i need new ball joints.?
As long as you can get the axle nut off the axle so you can slide the axle shaft out, then yes you can. You will need to pull the brake line in order to get the hub away from the vehicle far enough to remove the axle shaft........drop the spindle off the ball joints and pull away from vehicle.

  • How to change lower ball joint in a Dodge Durango with a 318?

You won't be able to do it with simple tools and elbow grease. In order to remove the old lower ball joint, you'll have to get it machine press out. Then machine press the new lower ball joint in its place. I suggest a dealership or any local mechanic with the proper machinery.

If I am not mistaken, this is a very difficult job for the common man. I believe you need a spring compressor, for the front suspension, if it is equipped with front struts. Unless you have access to a lift, to get the whole truck off of the ground, you may want to consider taking it somewhere to have it fixed.

easy get a lower ball joint remover and undo everything, you can do it in 3 to 4 hours.

I have change ny lower and upper ball joints on my ford expedition and still my truck vibrates at 60mph?

balance or replace your tires. front end alignment will not cause a vibration.
I have change ny lower and upper ball joints on my ford expedition and still my truck vibrates at 60mph?
I'm going to bet the mechanic you paid to change those told you that was the problem right? As you already know that was a very expensive repair and was more than likely unneeded. Vibration will usually occur due to a tire out of balance or the front end out of alignment. Both of which are relatively cheap fixes.
I have change ny lower and upper ball joints on my ford expedition and still my truck vibrates at 60mph?
Your tires are out of balance. You need to have weights on BOTH sides of the wheels to correct the problem. Most shops only install weights on the inside so it looks better. I have ran into this problem many many many times in my line of work.
ok um sorry to say it like this but uh i believe u have been taking advantage of an alignment will not ever make your car or truck vibrate usually that is only a wheel balance problem/and or a severely bent rim, also bad tires like if u see cupping on the tires or bulges on the tire all of which are cheaper than ball joints
They are right the only thing they did not say is a tire can have a twisted belt.

On my car the front ball joints need replacement.?

I took my 1990 honda civic to the dealer for diagnostics and they said that the front ball joints need replacement. I have the %26quot;Hayes%26quot; repair manual. It looks complicated. I expect this. I've started doing work on my own. I've done oil and oil filter changes, the center pipe, rotors and brake pads. Ball joints look tough and I want to do it right. Is there a website that has more pictures and such to help me along the way? Is it really all that complicated?
On my car the front ball joints need replacement.?
This site has great repair manuals online. I have about the same experience as you but I would be hesitant to try to change the ball joints myself.
On my car the front ball joints need replacement.?
Its a complicated process. U would rather leave this to a bunch of experts than u handling it. Try looking for a small workshop if possible
You need special tools that could cost $80 or more to do your ball joints. Also you need a good floor jack and jack stands. You may need a powered impact wrench if the fasteners are difficult to remove. I myself would bring it to a shop to have it done. You may need an alignment after the work is complete.

Okay I going to change my lower ball joint. How much is the labor work to install a new ball joint on a 00 Durango? Having a bad ball joint can affect your streering wheel? How do I know if my ball joint is really bad? The wheel dont move it make noise,
Okay I going to change my lower ball joint. How much is the labor work to install a new ball joint on a 00 Dur?
you should be able to jack your truck off the ground and put a bar under the tire and see if you have any slop in the front end. If You should see the components lift first then you have slop in the front end. If your front end is ok, then when you lift the tire, everything will move in unison.

If you have problems you might look at your idler arm. Its a problem and you can replace it for a few dollars.
Okay I going to change my lower ball joint. How much is the labor work to install a new ball joint on a 00 Dur?
cost will vary between shops so call three places will get you a good answer and yes it will make it sway some when driving way to know is jack it up and use a pry bar and lift on tire and look to see if anything moves under at ball joint if its real bad you can shake tire by hand from top to bottom and feel it that way also and if someone check the ball joint and said it was bad then you know and they dont make much noise might pop some when its real bad but really if its bad and wheel fall off when driving you really dont want to know what happens so be smart just cal a few shops ball joint its self about 25 to 50 bucks puting it in might be 200
I also own the 2000 Durango, be aware there is a recall for this item.

Take it to a dealer anywhere, it doesnt have to be the one that it was purchased from, and you dont have to be the original owner either.

The part and labor will be the resposibility of the dealer.

Front end problems after ball joint change.?

After changing the upper ball joints on my suburban, the truck now shutters and vibrates when driving after a short distance. Is this due to the front end needing an alignment. The truck never done that before the ball joint change. Thanks to any replies...
Front end problems after ball joint change.?
I would have the frt end alignment checked, any time you change frt end parts or parts related to steering or tire position, could also have other worn parts that the worn ball joints were masking...tie rods, idler arm, pitman arm,arm bushings....etc....good luck
Front end problems after ball joint change.?
    Make sure everything is tight.
If you have any major work done on your front end, you need to have the alignment checked. Also, check your wheel balance while you are having it aligned.

I have an 02 s-10 and my upper ball joints keep going out and i think it is due to the torsion bar?

My upper ball joints keep going out on my 02 s-10 zr5. i think the torsion bars need to be adjusted. I think that the ride height has changed some. Is that true? can it make the uppers go out?
I have an 02 s-10 and my upper ball joints keep going out and i think it is due to the torsion bar?
Don't listen to the guy saying S10s don't have torsions bars. Every 4WD S10 ever made has torsion bar front suspension and leaf spring rear. The ride height made need adjustment or the rear leaf springs may be sagging. It would have to be really bad to take out ball joints. The S/T trucks and Blazers have always worn ball joints. How often are they going out? Quality of the roads you drive on, quality of your shocks %26amp; off road driving will speed up the wear. Take it to a good frontend shop %26amp; have it really checked over or you can check the ball joints yourself if you have a floor jack. Jack the front end up at the lower control arm, grab the top %26amp; bottom of the tire %26amp; try to move it in %26amp; out. If you feel movment they are loose. Mabey have someone else move the tire so you can watch the ball joint. The key is where you jack it up. If you jack it up anywhere other than the lower control arm the suspension will be loaded up %26amp; loose ball joints won't show any movement. 0.125 inch movement up %26amp; down and side to side is normal. Good luck.
I have an 02 s-10 and my upper ball joints keep going out and i think it is due to the torsion bar?
sorry a stock s10 doesn't have torsion bars, find a different mechanic
you didn't mention if you had changed the ride height or wheelbase width thru aftermarket rims and/or tires either.

Will bad upper ball joint cause a noticible inward lean on front drivers side tire?

Just changed lower ball joint. It took some of the inward lean out. Some lean still left. Will a wheel alignment take care of this?
Will bad upper ball joint cause a noticible inward lean on front drivers side tire?
Your front end needs to be aligned. The leaning in is called negative camber. Could be caused by a ball joint or could be caused by bad bushings in the upper or lower control arms

I have soaked it in wd40 and heated it up. Any ideas?

I'm not real familiar with Dakota's, but it sounds like it has an independent front suspension with CV shafts? A lot of those, you need a special puller to push them out of the hub. I can't find anything that quite covers that here, but if you click this link, and then enter your Year, Make, Model and Engine, it will take you to a repair guide that might be of some help.

Be careful too, when you get the ball joint loose, that you have the coil spring compressed, or the control arms will spring apart rather violently. (I thought most Chrysler's used Torsion Bars actually, but same thing applies either way) If you're in the way, it could break some bones.

not much any easy way other than
First things first you take off the undercarriage. Then after that your going to want to put some lube on your hands. Then make a slight incision between the left and right tire right down the seam.

How do i change my front lower ball joints on my 2002 honda civic?

No offense, but if you have to ask on here I doubt that you will be able to change them. You should take it to a garage.
How do i change my front lower ball joints on my 2002 honda civic?
You will need to get the front end off the ground and use jackstands to support the car. take off the wheel and disconect the strut from the lower A-arm and set it aside... If your balljoints are bolted in, remove them from the lower A-arm.. It is very likely that the balljoint is pressed into the lower A-arm, and if so you will need to remove the A-arm, and take them to a shop with a press to have the old ones removed, and the new ones pressed in... If you dont have the tools, dont attempt... you will only hurt yourself.

  • How do i know when to change my ball joint?

i was wondering what signs let me know when it's time to change my ball joint. because recently my 1994 honda accord is making a banging sound, like metal on metal....it sounds like the problem is around the drivers side...but i'm not sure exactly where it's coming from.
How do i know when to change my ball joint?
generally aball joint sound is usually when you go over pot holes

best bet is to take it to speedy or one of those places it is a free inspection they will tell you what is wrong then you can elect to fix it yourself
How do i know when to change my ball joint?
First step is to determine where exactly the noise is coming from, usually when your ball joints go bad your steering gets loose and uneven tire wear is present. Does the noise only happen when you turn your steering wheel? It might be your CV joint (constant volicy joint) this is in the front wheel drive and usually costs about $250.00 per side to repair. Take it do a reputable garage and have them check it out for you, better to find out exactly what the ptoblem is and get that fixed
Jack your car up just enough so that the front tire is off the ground and you can put a bar (cro-bar or an equivalent) try lifting the bar and prying. If you see tire wiggle (not travel [suspension]), wether it be up and down or side to side, you know you need a new ball joint.
Usually a ball joint squeaks and the tire wears unevenly. If it's a CV joint, put it in reverse, turn the wheel all the way to one side and go back in a slow circle. It'll go click, click.

How difficult is it to change the ball joints on my 93 GMC k3500?

I recently purchased a 93 GMC K3500 with a 6.2 TD and was told it desperately needs new upper and lower ball joints, idler arm and pitman arm. I like to try to do my own work but I don't want to get into something that is beyond my capabilities. I know my way around Chevy trucks to an extent, but have never tackled this situation. Any feedback from someone who has done this before? Is this something I could do myself, or is this mechanic material?
How difficult is it to change the ball joints on my 93 GMC k3500?
its easilt something you can do yourself, you might want to invest in a puller for the pitman arm, or if you have a big enough gear puller, you can usually make that work, the ball joints are just a general pain in the but, if you do not have a press at your house you can try using a small one cranked with a ratchet, but most often they get stuck in there pretty good and you may have to take the whole control arm to the parts store to get pressed out. overall it is something that is worth doing yourself, who knows, they may just pop out with a hammer, every vehicle is defferent. you will save a boatload of cash doing this yourself
How difficult is it to change the ball joints on my 93 GMC k3500?
None of it is simply %26quot;easy%26quot; really, and ball joints can be a real pain sometimes doing it on the ground. To be honest, it might be better to suck it up and let an equipped shop do it for you, as several %26quot;special tools%26quot; are normally helpful...
Unless you have the proper tool, suggest you hire someone do the job that does.

How hard is it to change the ball joints on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4x4?

I know that the ball joints (upper AND lower) both need to be replaced. I have priced the parts on my own, and it would be SO much cheaper to do it myself. My question is, is this something that I could do myself at home? I've become pretty good at fixing most small things, but I haven't tackled anything like this before. I know all about the tools I will need to rent, which are all available at Autozone. I've done brake work, easy things like the alternator (a few times), shocks, etc., but have never messed with anything too big. Thanks!
How hard is it to change the ball joints on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4x4?
If you have the right tools (a ball-joint press is really the only special tool), it isn't that bad. Give yourself plenty of time to do it (like a whole day) just in case something comes up. Hopefully you have another way to get to the parts store in case you end up needing something in the middle of the job. If it ever gets off-road, you may want to consider changing the u-joints in the front axle at the same time since you;ll already have the axles out. Even if you don't change them, now is a good time to at least refill them with grease.

Get a service manual and go for it (there are online writeups as well, but they're not as convenient as having a book next to you). You never learn if you do try.

Should I attempt to change lower ball joints 97 Dodge ram 1500 2wd?

I've neve done any suspension work before and mildly mechanically inclined. I have tools and floor jack/ stands. However, I dont have $800.00 to fix my truck

I have a 97 dodge ram 1500 2wd that I took to Tires Plus this weekend for an alignment.

The mechanic told me it couldn't be aligned because my lower left ball joint had some play and it would be best to replace both. It would be $152.30(EACH) for 2 lower ball joints, $324.00 in labor, $19.44 for shop supplies and $45.37 for tax totalling $693.41!!! not including my alignment!! What a rip-off. The mechanic told me that if I brought it back within 30 days for them to repair, he would gladly take a hundred bucks off the total price!! (what a deal....NOT) I should have been a mechanic, and now i park the truck until I learn hopw to do it myself!!! Any pep talk? support ? I found a full set of upper and lower ball joints(all 4) online for around 60 bucks and found I can rent a press free with deposit at a local auto parts store but not sure of the difficulty and weary of attempting this myself to save 700 bucks+ %26quot;I think I can I think I can%26quot; lol Thanks Guys

actually that wasn't to bad of a deal considering the amount of work involved in doing that job, it might sound high now but by the time you rented the tools to do it with and actually did it you,d be wishing you had let them do it,i think the labor part was just a little high but considering how many i have done and know how hard this can be to do id say your getting a real good deal on the job,you might be able to do this and then again you may not,its worth a try though, and if you succeed you save money, but if not ,you don't save anything, good luck with it,
Should I attempt to change lower ball joints 97 Dodge ram 1500 2wd?
so here goes remove the brake caliper but not the brake line, tie the caliper out of the way with a strong string or something. remove the rotor. disconnect the tie rod end. Take the nut off the upper ball joint and seperate the upper control arm from the spindle. take the nut off the lower ball joint and remove the spindle. jack the lower arm up till it's level, dont put the jack under the ball joint because it comes out from the bottom but try to get it close. use something like a socket or a short 3/4 to 1 inch ratchet extension or something that is smaller than the top of the ball joint and a fairly heavy hammer and drive it out from the top. Instalation gets a bit tricky. use a socket slightly smaller than the main body of the lower joint and long enough so that the threaded part will go in it without bottoming out.use your hammer and tap it in as far as you can. Put your jack under the socket and jack it till the arm is level. use somt thing metal to cover the hole from the top and hit it with the hammer till the joint is flush with the top then just tap the arm near the ball joint till you get enough groove coming through to put the snap on. there should be enough force on the lower control rm so tht its not springy when you hit it. Be sure to keep the arm level as you go or the joint might try to go in tilted which could be very BAD! Its auctualy not as hard as it might sound I changed all 4 of
First thing I'd do is jack up the front end, one wheel at a time is fine, then firmly push and pull on the wheel. Do the top, bottom, and each side. You are looking, listening, and feeling for a tell-tale metallic click.

If you feel it, there is a good chance they are bad. If you don't, it does not necessarily mean they are good.

I'd then ask around for recommendations for a mechanic. I have never had luck with national/regional tire shops. Look for an independent shop with several mechanics, and one that's been around a few years, at least. Do NOT tell them the previous diagnosis. See what they say. Ask them to show you the evidence.

If their quote is similar, your choice on doing the work.

I'd spend the money on a repair manual (Chilton, Haynes, etc) that covers your Dodge. Read the section covering this or any future repair and then decide if you want to do it yourself. Based on the research and initiative in your Q, my guess is you will have no problems.

Also, air tools are handy to have around for this and the job will require a good torque wrench, which will eat a lot of your savings if you need to purchase one. You sound like a person who could get a lifetime of use out of one.

  • How can you tell when you need ball joints?

I took my jeep liberty 2002 to have a oil change and they told me I need to replace both arms because the ball joints were bad.
How can you tell when you need ball joints?
Steering related: Car does not drive straight down the road when you let go of the steering wheel, or does not return to the center on its own when you go around a corner, or there is heavy metallic thumping noises(not coming from the trunk); tires wearing out prematurely are a few indicators.
How can you tell when you need ball joints?
most of the time you can look at the front wheels and if the wheels are leaning a little it that might be a sign of bad or worn ball joints ,you can also jack it up and take a pry bar and see if the move up and down without moving the control arm, that's a sure way to find out if you know how to do it,or take the easy way out and have a shop check them, most shops will do a quick check for no cost and tell you if they are bad or not, good luck.
It seems that there was a recall on 336,000 2002 Jeep Liberty vehicles concerning the lower ball joints. Maybe yours is on the recall list. Check this web site and call the number given to see if yours is on the list. http://www.automallusa.net/2002/jeep/lib鈥?/a> Or search %26quot;2002 Jeep Liberty recalls%26quot; and read some of the information pertaining to your vehicle.

If you grip the top of one of the front tires and forcefully push and pull it the joints should make an audible clicking sound if they are worn. ...Good Luck...
Has the recall been done on your Liberty?

If not, get it to a dealer tonight.

When they fail - your front wheels fall in like a cartoon car - if it happens when you are moving, your Jeep rolls over.
They will start to make noise. And will affect the alignment.
i don't really know much about on a jeep but i had a chevy truck that when my ball joints were bad it would make a whining noise every time i turned the wheel
you probably won't notice anything, if you don't believe them take it somewhere else

How to change ball joint on 1994 f150 4x4?

    Upper or lower???
How to change ball joint on 1994 f150 4x4?
its quite the pain in the ***.

    youll need

    a pickle fork

    a big ****** hammer

    pry bar

    ball join press

    various sockets

and this one is optional but makes the work alot easier

    an impact gun.

youll also need various pliers and wrenches

basically you remove everything in the way, rotors, caliper. then loosen the castle nut on the back and remove the cotter pin, once thats out, you use the pickle fork and separate the joint, then use your press and remove the old ball joint, then press in the new one and reassemble.

keep in mind this is all easier said than done
